Madagascar, Kung-Fu Panda Sequels Likely

During a presentation of footage from the upcoming Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Wednesday that fans can expect at least one more Madagascar movie. The Hollywood Reporter also notes that the studio is looking into a second Kung Fu Panda adventure.

Directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa continues the adventures of pampered Central Park Zoo animals who have been accidentally shipped off to Africa. Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith are joined in the voice cast by the late Bernie Mac as the voice of Zuba, father of Stiller’s character, Alex the lion.

The directors joined Katzenberg in previewing 30 minutes of the family flick, which opens on Nov. 7. Katzenberg hinted that the third installment may bring the story arc full circle in returning the animals to New York. The first film took in more than $530 million worldwide and was DreamWorks Animation’s top-grossing non-sequel until Kung Fu Panda came along and raked in roughly $560 million in theaters around the world. Katzenberg reportedly said that the studio will be able to begin serious discussions regarding a Panda sequel in the next month or two.
