qubo Partners with KaBOOM! for Playgrounds

qubo, the multiplatform children’s programming outlet from Scholastic, ION Media Networks, NBC Universal, Corus Ent. and Classic Media, has teamed with national nonprofit organization KaBOOM! (www.kaboom.org) to see that every child in America has a safe place to play within walking distance. The partnership will run through the end of 2009, underscoring qubo’s mission of promoting healthy lifestyles for children.

The cornerstone program of the partnership is the KaBOOM! ‘Playful City USA’ initiative, which honors cities that have demonstrated a commitment to improving play within their communities. In early September, KaBOOM! and qubo will announce the list of 2008 Playful City USA communities with an extensive marketing campaign including on-air and online promos, public service announcements, print ads and conferences, including an event at the National League of Cities conference in Orlando, Fla. The two organizations will also build another playground together in 2009.

KaBOOM! and qubo first collaborated in May of 2008, when qubo sponsored the construction of a KaBOOM! playground at Sarah T. Reed Elementary School in New Orleans. KaBOOM! oversaw the efforts of hundreds of individuals, including qubo employees, members of the local community and volunteers from the cable industry. These volunteers turned an empty lot into an exciting new playground in just one day. The build was part of the CableCares community service project launched during the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) annual convention.

qubo’s multi-platform offerings can be found on NBC on Saturday mornings, ION TV network Fridays afternoons and Telemundo weekend mornings, as well as on qubo’s 24/7 digital broadcast channel and website, www.qubo.com. The qubo Channel is broadcast in both English and Spanish, and is available in all markets served by an ION Television station, Verizon’s FIOS TV, AT&T’s U-Verse, Mediacom and Comcast. Programming offerings include the animated shows Postman Pat, Miss BG, Zimmer Twins, VeggieTales, Jane and the Dragon, 3-2-1 Penguins! and Dragon. Joining the lineup this fall are the cartoon series My Friend Rabbit from Nelvana, Sammy’s Story Shop and Turbo Dogs from Scholastic and CCI.
