This weekend will see the release of Spore, the eagerly awaited new massively single-player game from Electronic Arts Inc. and Maxis, the development studio of Sims creator Will Wright. The debut follows the release of the Spore Creature Creator earlier this summer. The application allows users to model their own creatures for use in the game, and saw roughly 250,000 unique creatures created by the second day of availability.
Spore is an online virtual world where gamers create a whole new species of animal and evolve it for survival in an ever-changing and expanding universe. How creatures evolve depends on the characteristics gamers design into them.
Using the Creature Creator, which retails for $9.99, players can manipulate provided forms with easy-to-use modeling tools to design their own animated beasties or model them after existing characters from other games, cartoons or movies. The creations can then be uploaded to the web for other players to enjoy. The game’s creators have been amazed at the creativity exhibited by gamers thus far.
