Imagi, the animation company behind last year’s CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, TMNT, has posted a clip on its website that offers a brief glimpse at its upcoming feature film based on the classic anime series Gatchaman. The CG update is being directed by Kevin Munroe ( TMNT) and is expected to hit theaters in 2010.
Gatchaman is based on anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida’s TV series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, which debuted in the 1970s and is better known in the U.S. as Battle of the Planets or G-Force. The movie is set in a future world grappling with environmental and technological issues. The story focuses on five reluctant heroes whose remarkable genetic code makes them Earth’s only hope of defeating extra-terrestrial invaders. Comic-book scribe and Warner Bros. Animation veteran Paul Dini (Batman: the Animated Series, Superman, Batman Beyond, Duck Dodgers) collaborated on the script.
Imagi’s Imagi is also producing a big CG-animated feature based on Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy, which is being directed by David Bowers (Flushed Away). Check out the Gatchaman clip at http://mirrorus.imagi.com.hk//web/main.php?lang=eng.
