One-Two Punch for Kung Fu Panda Pics

DreamWorks Animation is working on a companion piece to Kung Fu Panda that will be packaged with the feature film on DVD. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Paramount Home Entertainment will release Kung Fu Panda and the direct-to-video production Secrets of the Furious Five together on DVD and Blue-ray Disc on Sunday, Nov. 9.

Directed by Raman Hui, co-director of Shrek the Third, Secrets of the Furious Five reportedly explores the origins of the title quintet, an elite assembly of Kung Fu fighters idolized by Po, Jack Black’s character in the first film. Black reprises the role and Dustin Hoffman is back as Master Shifu. There is no word on whether or not Angelina Joilie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogan or David Cross have returned to their Furious Five roles.

Kung Fu Panda was released over the summer and has grossed roughly $611 million worldwide. The pic is sure to spawn another big-screen installment in addition to the straight-to-video companion film, which will help make Kung Fu Panda a hot seller this holiday season. Releasing a DVT pic with its theatrical predecessor is an unusual move, as is putting out a major release on Sunday. Most new DVD release debut on Tuesday. The ‘Pandamonium Double Pack’ will retail for under $25, and a Kung Fu Panda solo release will be available for under $20.
