Simpsons’ Gould Hooked for Sea Monsters

With its big-budget, big-screen version of Land of the Lost slated to hit theaters next summer, Universal is looking to make a movie based on another ’70s Saturday-morning favorite from Sid and Marty Krofft. Daily Variety reports the studio has hired comedian and long-time Simpsons writer/exec producer Dana Gould to pen a Sigmund and the Sea Monsters feature. The Kroffts will produce the pic with Jimmy Miller, who also produced Land of the Lost through his Mosaic shingle.

Sigmund captivated kids with the adventures of a sea monster who was exiled for being too nice and came to live with two children who had to hide him the adults in their lives. Part of the Krofft Superstars lineup, the show debuted on NBC in 1973 and wrapped in 1975. The sea monsters in the series were costumed performers, but CG animation is likely to be used in the film.

Sony is developing a live-action version of the Kroffts’ H.R. Pufnstuff and is negotiating with director Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters Vs. Aliens). The Kroffts also hope to snag studio deals for other properties, including Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, The Bugaloos, Dr. Shrinker, Bigfoot and Wildboy and Wonderbug.
