Guardians Glides to 2nd Place Behind Social Network

The owls of Ga’hoole held steady this past weekend as the animated feature Legends of the Guardians glided to second place behind critical darling The Social Network at the box office.

Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole earned an estimated $10.8 million and held on to second place just ahead of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps with $10.1 million and The Town with an even $10 million.

Leading this week’s releases was the David Fincher drama The Social Network, which debuted with a $23 million gross.

The first animated film from director Zack Snyder, Legends of the Guardians has grossed an estimated $1.2 million overseas. It has yet to open in a number of major foreign markets. Animal Logic animated the stereoscopic 3D release. The Australian studio is best known for making the Oscar-winning Happy Feet.

Also still in release is another CG-animated film in stereoscopic 3D, Alpha & Omega, from Lionsgate and Crest Animation. The film earned $3 million for the weekend, good for 10th place in its third weekend of release. Alpha & Omega has grossed an estimated $19 million domestically and about $3.6 million overseas.
