Disney Hopes Holidays Get ‘Tangled’ Up at the Theater

Thanksgiving is about to get a bit hairy for moviegoers.

That’s because this weekend sees the opening of Tangled, the 50th feature film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, at more than 3,600 theaters nationwide.

Released in stereoscopic 3D and 2D versions, the retelling of the classic tale of Rapunzel is directed by Byron Howard and Nathan Greno and features the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi and Donna Murphy.

The movie is tracking well with critics — Rotten Tomatoes reports as of Tuesday afternoon a 93 percent fresh rating and Metacritic has it with a 72 rating.

Other new films out mid-week for holiday viewing include Burlesque, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, in about 3,000 theaters; action film Faster in about 2,400 cinemas; and the comedy Love and Other Drugs, opening in about 2,400 theaters.

All the newcomers have to face the powerhouse that is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1. The film has grossed an estimated $133 million through Monday and will continue to be hot this weekend.

Also still in the mix is Megamind, from DreamWorks Animation. It has grossed an estimated $110 million in just over three weeks of release.
