MegaMind is the Big Brain at the Box Office

MegaMind was the big brain at the box office this weekend, topping the rankings in its opening weekend with an estimated $47.7 million.

The DreamWorks Animation feature has earned overall positive reviews, with critical aggregate sites Metacritic giving it a 64 rating and Rotten Tomatoes rating it 68 percent fresh.

The start was strong for MegaMind, which is directed by Tom McGrath and stars the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt.

Opening in second place was the comedy Due Date, with $33 million, followed by the first weekend of the Tyler Perry drama For Colored Girls with $20 million.

Other animated films still in release include Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole, which has earned $54 million domestically and $66 million overseas for a worldwide total of about $120 million.

Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me edged up to a $248 million domestic total. The movie has grossed about $231 million overseas for a total of $479 million.

Also still in release is the Disney-Pixar hit Toy Story 3, which has made $414 million domestically and $646 million overseas for a $1.1 billion total.
