Nintendo has announced the era of the Wii is coming to an end, and will announce its follow-up console at this year’s E3 Expo in June.
The Japanese company issued a statement today saying a playable model of the new console will be shown at E3, which is set for June 7-9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and will come to market in 2012.
No word was given on what the console would be called or any of its technical specs.
The Wii has sold more than 86 million units since its debut in 2006.
“As for the details of exactly what it will be, we have decided that it is best to let people experience it for themselves at E3,” Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said, according to a report from Reuters. “So I won’t talk about specific details today, but it will offer a new way of playing games within the home.”
Rumors are speculating that the new console will include controllers with touchpads and offer high-definition images.
Iwata did say that the new console would not focus on 3D gaming as not enough users have 3D televisions.
