The robots in disguise remained the top draw at the box office for the second week in a row as Transformers: Dark of the Moon became the year’s top-grossing movie.
Based on the Hasbro toys and classic 1980s animated TV series, the third film in Michael Bay’s Transformers series grossed $47 million this weekend, bringing its total to $261 million domestic. Overseas, the movie has grossed $384 million for a worldwide to-date total of $645 million in just two weekends of release.
A pair of new releases came in second and third, with Horrible Bosses earning $28 million and Zookeeper earning $21 million in ticket sales.
Disney-Pixar’s Cars 2 came in fourth place with a $15 million weekend. The animated feature has sold $148 million in tickets domestically and $121 million overseas for a $270 million worldwide total.
DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 earned $860,000 in its seventh weekend of release. It has earned $159 million domestic and a whopping $404 million international for a total of $563 million.
Next week sees the first major challenge for Transformers with the release of the highly anticipated Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, as well as Disney’s 2D animated entry Winnie the Pooh.
