Aardman Animation has done it again. The Bristol-based studio’s teaser trailer for BBC Radio’s adaptation of Sir Tom Stoppard’s play Darkside has created quite a buzz on the web. The radio play, itself, is inspired by Pink Floyd’s seminal Dark Side of the Moon album, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The philosophical comedy stars Bill Nighy and Rufus Sewell and will be broadcast on Radio 2 on August 26 in the U.K.
Aardman’s three-minute long trailer is a collection of disturbing images of a world seemingly on the verge of collapse, with skies filled with warplanes, as a voiceover warns of the consequence of mankind’s destruction of Earth’s natural resources:
“We’ve consumed everything…the last rhino has given up his horn for a cancer cure that doesn’t work. The last fish is gasping beneath a floating island of plastic as big as France. The weather forecast is a state secret…”
“I didn’t try to make a story that was the album writ large in any way,” Stoppard told the BBC.” I invented a little story in the spirit of the album, taking a cue as to what level of reality this story might be on.”
