Universal/Illumination’s huge blockbuster movie Despicable Me 2 had another record-breaking weekend at the box office worldwide as its cume crossed the $800 million barrier. The CG-animated pic, directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin has now amassed over $805.759 million globally (U.S. gross: $350.659 mil), in less than two months in theaters. The movie is also the second highest grossing picture of 2013 Stateside, right behind Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man 3. According to Universal chief Steve Burke the sequel has become the most profitable film in the studio’s history and Universal’s second highest grossing movie of all time worldwide, behind Jurassic Park.
In other animated box office news, Disney’s Planes was the only toon n the U.S. box office this weekend (Aug. 25). Directed by Klay Hall, this spin-off of Pixar’s Cars franchise was the No. 4 feature at the box office Stateside with an $8.567 million weekend and and an impressive $59.591 million cume in the U.S. (and 77.391 million globally) after two weeks in theaters.
Meanwhile, Universal got more good news overseas as Spielberg’s Jurassic Park 3D was able to attract huge numbers to the classic. The pic made $30 million in ticket sales, including $28.8 million in China. The stereoscopic reboot of the 1993 movie raked in about $45.5 million in the U.S. when it was released in April.
Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University continues to woo audiences as well. It made an additional $20 million this past week, $19.6 million from overseas theaters and $375 million Stateside. The Dan Scanlon-directed sequel has an enviable global cume of $686.2 million.
The next big animated feature to hit theaters will be the buzzy Sony Animation sequel, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which arrives on Sept. 27.
