First Disney Store to Open in China in 2015

The first Disney Store in mainland China will open its doors by early 2015 in Lujiazui, a locality within Shanghai. The 53, 000 square-foot Lujiazui site will be located in Shanghai’s financial hub, and will offer about 10,800 square feet of retail space and a Disney-themed outdoor plaza area.

“We are enormously proud to be building Disney’s largest store in the world in China,” said Stanley Cheung, exec vp and managing director of The Walt Disney Company’s Greater China unit. “Disney has combined the retail concept with storytelling, fun and innovation and will provide families with a uniquely immersive entertainment destination featuring our best-loved stories and characters,” he said.

He added that the flagship Disney Store will feature the largest and most diverse collection of Disney products by local and international designers.

The experiential stores will focus on interactive displays and events with IPs across Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars brands. The plaza will feature Disney-themed landscaping and will have the capacity to host outdoor. The site will also offer customers the ability to track the progress of Shanghai Disney Resort which is targeted to open at the end of 2015. The surrounding area is reportedly tracking foot-traffic of more than 40 million visitors a year.

First launched in 1987, the Disney Store currently has 340 locations around the world.
