Noah topped the box office with a strong $44 million opening, but it was Disney’s Frozen that set the record this weekend as it passed Pixar’s Toy Story 3 to become the highest-grossing animated feature of all time.
On the tail end of its theatrical run, Frozen‘s $348,000 domestic helped push its worldwide total to $1.072 billion, surpassing Toy Story 3‘s $1.062 billion gross. That also places it among the top 10 highest grossing features of all time.
On the domestic scale, Frozen is in fourth place, with $398 million. Shrek 2‘s $441 million still tops that list, followed by The Lion King with $422 million and Toy Story 3 with $415 million.
The VFX-heavy Noah, directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Russell Crowe, earned $51 million overseas for a $95 million opening weekend. It was followed by Lionsgate’s Divergent, which earned $26.5 million for a $95 million two-week total; it has yet to be released in any foreign territories. Muppets Most Wanted was in third with $11.4 million, for a $33 million domestic total and $7 million overseas for a $40 million global tally.
DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman was in fourth place with $9.5 million. It’s nearing the century mark with $94 million earned domestically and $123 million abroad for a $218 million total.
Warner Bros.’ The LEGO Movie earned $3.1 million in its eighth weekend of release. It’s earned $248 million domestic and $152 million overseas for a $400 million worldwide total.
Friday sees the release of Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, followed on April 11 by Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ Rio 2.
