It’s an ‘Apes’ World at the Box Office

Caesar has triumphed again.

The new VFX-heavy feature Dawn of the Planet of the Apes easily conquered the box office this weekend with a strong $73 million domestic opening. The film’s $30 million take from overseas ticket buyers gave a $103 million worldwide opening weekend.

Slipping to second place is Transformers: Age of Extinction, which sold $16.5 million in tickets this weekend to bring its total to $209 million domestic and $543 million overseas for a $752 million total.

Holding on to fifth place is DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2, which took in $5.8 million in domestic ticket sales in its fifth weekend of release. The feature has earned $152 million domestic and $197 million foreign for a $349 million worldwide total.

Just behind Dragon 2 in sixth place is Earth to Echo, with $5.5 million in domestic ticket sales. That brings the film’s total to $24 million domestic. It has yet to open overseas.

Eighth place goes to Maleficent, which sold $4 million in tickets it its seventh weekend in release. The Disney feature has earned $221 million domestic and $447 million overseas for a $668 million total.

The weekend’s 13th place film is the sci-fi thriller Edge of Tomorrow, with $1.8 million in ticket sales. It’s earned $94 million domestic and $256 million overseas for a $350 million total.

And lastly, in 16th place, is Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, with just over $1 million in domestic ticket sales this weekend. The Marvel adaptation has earned $229 million domestic and $502 million overseas for a $731 million total.
