It’s a web of wild home video releases this week, with the latest from Marvel’s arachnid superstar, a documentary on men who love pony toons and some vintage and new animated curiosities to explore.
Up first is the early summer hit The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony, $45.99 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy; $40.99 Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy; $30.99 DVD and digital copy). This installment in the rebooted Spidey series sees Peter Parker go up against Electro, the Green Goblin and the Rhino — all while trying to keep his true love Gwen Stacey out of trouble. If you know comics, you know how that’s gonna end. There’s also plenty of state of the art VFX and animation in the pic, so you know it will look cool.
Also out this week is A Brony Tale (Virgil, $19.99 DVD), which is not animation but worth noting anyway. The documentary by voice-over actress Ashleigh Ball looks into the phenomenon of Bronies, the male fans who get all weak in the knees over the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic animated series.
Warner Bros. has a pair of interesting releases, starting with the original movie Scooby-Doo: Frankencreepy (Warner Bros., $24.98 Blu-ray, $19.98 DVD) and continuing with the Warner Archive release of Gilligan’s Planet (Warner Bros., $29.99). The latter is something children of the 1970s will remember quite vividly, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: an animated version of Gilligan’s Island set in outer space.
And the anime enthusiasts have some interesting picks to make with the high-def disc debut of Mayo Chiki: The Complete Collection (Section23 Films, $69.98 Blu-ray), as well as Toriko: Collection 1 (Part 1 & 2) (FUNimation, $34.98) and A Certain Scientific Railgun: Season 2, Part 2 (FUNimation, $59.98 DVD).
