The Tokyo International Film Festival, taking place in the mega-metropolis this October 23-31, will feature the global premiere of Disney’s first-ever Marvel animation feature Big Hero 6, which will open the 27th edition of the event. The film arrives in U.S. theaters November 7.
“The setting of our film, San Fransokyo, is a fictional, futuristic mash-up of two of our favorite cities in the world–San Francisco and Tokyo,” Big Hero 6 directors Don Hall and Chris Williams said in a statement. “The research we did in Tokyo informed every detail of the film. We look forward to bringing our film to this city that so deeply inspired us.”
In a nice bookend, the festival will close with another comic adaptation: Takashi Yamazaki’s Parasyte, based on the manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki, which features lots of CG creature animation and visual effects. The event will also boast the first major retrospective of animation and live-action director Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion). The programming includes 50 of his works drawn from TV and feature animation, shorts, commercials, live-action features and promotional videos.
