Signe Baumane’s animated feature Rocks in My Pockets has been selected to represent her home country of Latvia in the race for the Best Foreign Language Oscar, Variety reports. Baumane, who is based in New York, is best known for her hand crafted shorts dealing with everything from women’s rights to sexuality to going to the dentist.
Rocks in My Pockets is a complex, personal narrative which delves into the lives of five women in Baumane’s family and their struggles with mental illness. It explores questions of heredity and madness through visual metaphors, surrealism and steam-release humor.
The film is currently in limited theatrical release in North America through Zeitgeist Films — visit rocksinmypocketsmovie.com to see screening locations and dates.
