Pickups and Premieres: Poppy Cat, Octonauts, Regular Show, Black Dynamite, Slugterra

It’s fall TV season time, which means there’s plenty of premieres and pickups for animated series aimed at both young and old.

Here’s the latest:

  • Nerd Corps Entertainment has greenlit a third season comprised of 13 episodes of its hit boys action property Slugterra. The new season follows three Slugterra TV movies that rolled out in 2014. The third movie, titled Slug Fu Showdown, and 17 new one-minute “slugisode” shorts are in production, slated for fall 2014, and global rollout for all three movies on Disney XD and free-to-air is underway. Slugterra launched on Netflix in the US in July, and the first two Slugterra movies— Slugterra: Ghoul from Beyond and Slugterra: Return of the Elementals—aired on Disney XD in the US in August.
  • Silvergate Media has sold a fourth season of its hit preschool show Octonauts to Disney. The new series includes 12 22-minute episodes and two 22-minute specials. The series launched on the Disney Junior block in 2012. The new episodes are set to air in 2015.
  • Cartoon Network’s Regular Show will return Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT with its sixth-season premiere. The premiere episode picks up on the exciting finale of season five, which saw Mordecai and CJ go on a “real date” and actually kiss. The premiere episode sees Mordecai taking CJ to meet his parents. The new season also will include a “Terror Tales” Halloween special.
  • Black Dynamite is ready to explode into its second season Oct. 18 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim. Based on 2009’s critically acclaimed feature film, the Black Dynamite animated series further chronicles the exploits of the central character, Black Dynamite, and his crew. Black Dynamite is produced by Ars Nova, N-BOMB SQUAD and Cartoon Network Studios. Jon Steingart and Carl Jones are executive producers.
  • The second season of Coolabi’s preschool series Poppy Cat debuts Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. on Sprout. The show will air seven days a week in that slot, as well as on the NBC Kids block on Saturday mornings, which is programmed by Sprout.
