Wouldn’t you love to have a custom figurine of that one-of-a-kind animated character you’ve come up with? 3-D printing company Shapeways has partnered with the 3D Modeling and Animation Facebook group — comprised of over 35,000 members — to create the Shapeways 3D Animation to 3D Print Contest. Submissions opened September 10 and will remain so until October 15, 2014.
Design submissions will be judged on creativity, technique and printability, and the judges will look for work that pushes the boundaries of 3D printing while demonstrating an in-depth understanding of the medium’s possibilities. One first place winner will receive $200 in Shapeways credit and a 3D print of their model. There will also be one second place ($50 in credit) and two third place prizes ($35 credit). Plus, every person who enters the contest will automatically receive $10 in Shapeways credit.
Prospective entrants who need some tips can check out Shapeways’ tutorial hub (www.shapeways.com/tutorials) for help. Entries should have a print cost of $200 or less, which can be automatically determined upon submission, so send in your designs early in case revisions are needed to meet the price point. Winners will be announced before October 31.
