Disney Announces ‘Moana’ Feature for 2016

Walt Disney Animation Studios revealed plans for the animated feature Moana, a CG-animated comedy-adventure about a spirited teenager on an impossible mission to fulfill her ancestors’ quest.

Scheduled for release in late 2016, the film is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, whose previous credits include The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog and Aladdin.

In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

Disney released some concept art to go with the announcement. Take a look:

  1. LOOKS GOOD TO ME! I THINK IT’S GONNA BE ONE OF THE BEST ANIMATED FILMS OF 2016 AND RON CLEMENTS AND JOHN MUSKER ARE GONNA DO GOOD WITH JUST LIKE THEY DID WITH THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE, LITTLE MERMAID, ALADDIN, TREASURE PLANET, AND PRINCESS AND THE FROG! THOSE 2 GUYS ARE ANIMATED GENIUSES AND CAN DO NO WRONG! I LOVE ANIMATION!

  2. I am excited. I think it’s going to be awesome – the change of setting and inspiration will at least make it stand out.

  3. To be honest, I think it looks absolutely phenomenal! From what I’ve heard, Disney and Pixar have been secretly developing a tool that can give CGI a painterly style that rises far about traditional cel-shading. Rumor has it, they’ll be using that new software to animate Moana. The technicalities of how it actually works seem really advanced, but they’ve already shown it’s possible with their Paperman short.
