Scrat to Make Macy’s Parade Debut’

Everyone’s favorite prehistoric rodent is finally getting his due — although he probably still won’t quite snatch that acorn. Scrat, of Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ Ice Age franchise, will for the first time appear as a giant balloon in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The 89th annual New York City event will take place November 26, airing on NBC at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

“I keep pinching myself just to trying to understand that the awareness of the Scrat is as big as it is, and it’s just a silly thing we thought up one day,” Chris Wedge told USA Today. Wedge has been a key force in the Ice Age movies since their inception (including voicing Scrat) and is currently EP on the fifth film, Collision Course, out July 22. “It’s one of those surreal moments that you never thought you’d witness.”

The oversized saber-toothed critter balloon measures 59 feet long, 24 feet wide and 41 feet tall. He will be pursuing his lovely acorn all down the Avenue, as it too is getting the 21-foot-tall balloon treatment.
