VIZ Media has officially released Sailor Moon Crystal Set 1 to the home entertainment market. Fans can bring home the first 14 episodes of this reboot based on Naoko Takeuchi’s classic shoujo manga (blus fun bonus features) on Blu-ray combo (available as Limited or Standard Edition) and DVD now. And yes, old school fans: The classic series is also available on disc from VIZ.
Produced by Toei Animation, Sailor Moon Crystal tells the story of Usagi Tsukino, an awkward teenage girl whose life is turned upside-down when she becomes Sailor Moon, guardian of justice and the Legendary Silver Crystal. With Tokyo under constant threat from the dark forces of Queen Metalia, Usagi’s arrival couldn’t have come at a better time. And luckily, she won’t have to do it alone! Other Sailor Guardians are awakening to join in the fight and help Usagi answer the biggest question of all: What power does the Legendary Silver Crystal hold?
The Sailor Moon Crystal Set 1 Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack is a four-disc collection (two DVDs & two BD), packaged with an exclusive chipboard box with specialty printing; seven full-color collectible art cards; and a premium 88-page full-color art booklet featuring episode summaries, exclusive interviews, character settings and more. You know…I love Sailor Moon but I’m sorry I’m opting out this go round. I don’t know what it is about this this show but it has always been over priced in contrast to its competitors (DBZ, Pokémon etc which have ranged from $30-50) First ADV/Pioneer wanted to charge $100 per season, so that’s $400 right there. Then they charged $70-80 bucks for the movie trilogy. (Heaven only knows what they would have charged had Blu-Ray been around then.) Now VIZ wants to charge $70-80 for Crystal season 1, which is 14 episodes?!
Bye
I usually wait to pick up new releases, after a couple of months the price drops pretty dramatically. I’ve picked up the first season of the original series part 1 & 2 for $20 a piece. Check back in about 6 months the price would probably be closer in the $30 to $40 range.
I hear you on that, waiting for the price to drop. But that’s a gamble to an extent because you never how long they will sell for or how many they intend to ship and keep in stock. I know with the ADV/Pioneer version this was so because the license was expiring soon and what they had is what they had. Idk if it’s on iTunes but I may purchase it there, that or wait and see if they do a bundle collection of all the seasons.
