Toei Revives ‘Mazinger Z’ for the Big Screen

Tokyo-based Toei Animation is bringing back its classic anime brand Mazinger Z for a new feature film, 45 years after the original manga by Go Nagai debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump. The early adaption of science fiction storytelling into Japanese animation remains popular with anime fans worldwide, especially in Europe and Latin America.

Mazinger Z follows the adventures of Koji Kabuto in an out-of-this-world series of adventures, full of giant robots, incredible challenges and memorable villains like Dr. Hell. The Toei TV series was immensely popular, and was followed by a second, Great Mazinger, and third, UFO Robot Grendizer. The anime continues to influence filmmakers decades later, with Guillermo del Toro notably citing it as an inspiration for his Pacific Rim films.

The Mazinger Z feature film is produced by Toei Animation and distributed by Toei Company Ltd. Further details are yet to be announced.
