‘Cars 3’ Races Past ‘Wonder Woman’ at the Box Office

Pixar’s Cars 3 raced to the front of the pack at this weekend’s box office with an opening-weekend domestic gross of $54 million and a foreign take of $21million for a $75 million worldwide bow.

That’s on the lower end of performance for a Pixar film, beating after inflation adjustments only The Good Dinosaur. However, the Cars series has been a huge driver of merchandise sales for the studio, likely offsetting any concerns about its box office performance.

More newsworthy is the strong second-place finish for Wonder Woman, which held up remarkably well in its third weekend of release with a $41 million domestic take. That puts the movie at a whopping $275 million domestic gross and $297 million foreign gross for a worldwide tally of $572 million.

Sixth place went to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which took in $8.5 million domestic. Its domestic total four weeks into its release is $150 million, more than tripled by a huge foreign take of $500 million.

In eighth place is DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, with $7.4 million in tickets sales its third weekend in release. The movie has earned $58 million domestic to date and $4.7 million foreign for a $63 million worldwide total.

And in ninth place is Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, with a $5 million weekend — its seventh. The space adventure has earned a solid $375 million domestic and $470 million foreign for a worldwide tally of $844 million.
