CALL FOR ENTRIES: GLAS Animation Festival 2019
Berkeley’s super hip animation event is accepting works made after January 2017 in the categories of Narrative Shorts, Non-Narrative/Experimental Shorts, Undergraduate Shorts, Graduate Shorts, Commissioned Shorts, and Features. The deadline is November 30, 2018. GLAS 2019 is slated for March 21-24, presenting the film festival as well as exhibits from local and international artists, curated programs and retrospectives, workshops, panels, performances and more.

NFB’s ‘Biidaaban: First Light’ VR Experience Transforms Toronto Square
Locals and visitors to Toronto can embrace a unique experience next month as room-scale VR piece takes over Nathan Phillips Square with a reimagined future city vibrant with indigenous language and culture. Biidaaban: First Light is produced by the NFB and presented in collaboration with City of Toronto and the imagineNATIVE festival, and is created by award-winning Anishinaabe artist Lisa Jackson, 3D artists Mathew Borrett, digital design/produciton agency Jam3 and NFB’s Digital Studio.

’LazyTown’s “Robbie Rotten” Actor Stefan Karl Stefansson Dies
The stage actor and former puppeteer turned kids’ TV star who brought to life the show’s scheming villain succumbed to cancer at age 43. Stefansson had been initially diagnosed with bile duct cancer in 2016 and had it surgically removed, however in March he posted to Twitter letting his fans know the disease had returned and was inoperable: “It’s not until they tell you you’re going to die soon that you realise how short life is. Time is the most valuable thing in life because it never comes back. And whether you spend it in the arms of a loved one or alone in a prison cell, life is what you make of it. Dream big.”
Stefansson is survived by his wife, Steinunn Olina Thorsteinsdottir, and four children. There is a nearly-complete petition to have a statue of Stefansson erected in his hometown in Iceland on Change.org.
