Portugal’s 42nd CINANIMA animation fest is a month away, and organizers have revealed the films that will be competing in its international and national tracks, as well as the International Grand Panorama. These include four feature films, 45 international shorts, 36 international student films, 30 shorts and three features in the Panorama, plus special screenings, competitions for young Portuguese directors, films for kids and more. The Grand Prize winner will qualify for the 92nd Academy Awards.
The 2018 event is set for November 12-18 in Espinho, with full schedule details to be revealed in the coming days at www.cinanima.pt.
The International Short Films competition includes many of the year’s most celebrated shorts, including This Magnificent Cake! (Marc Roels, Emma de Swaef), Inanimate (Lucia Bulgheroni), The Cat’s Regret (Alain Gagnol, Jean-Loup Felicioli), Mermaids and Rhinos (Viktória Traub) and Obon (Andre Hörmann, Samo). The most represented country of origin is France, with 19 films produced or co-produced there. Portugal accounts for six, Russia has four, Belgium and the U.K. each have two, with titles hailing from as far afield as Iran, Georgia, Canada, Australia and elsewhere.
Vying in the International Feature Films contest will be Czech CG family flick Harvie and the Magic Museum (Martin Kotik), the dramatic labor rights history A Man Is Dead from France (Olivier Cossu), feverish coming-of-age tale Virus Tropical from Colombia (Santiago Calcedo), and NFB Canada’s innovative exploration of Israel/Palestine’s physical split in WALL (Cam Christiansen).
