The latest Dragon Ball movie has broken a new box office record for the franchise. The new movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which is directed by Tatsuya Nagamine and written by Akira Toriyama, made over 2 billion yen (over $18 million) in its first 11 days at the box office, which is the fastest film in the series to reach this milestone.
Although the film lost its number one spot at the Japanese box office when Disney’s Wreck- Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It-Ralph 2 was released, it did manage to earn over 2 million yen ($3.69 million) in its second weekend at the box office.
Series creator Akira Toriyama noted, “The character Broly has apparently been popular since way back when, so if the movie weren’t well-received now, it would’ve been because the story I wrote was no good, so I’m a bit relieved. Even so, as I think those of you who’ve seen it already know, those battle scenes done by Toei Animation were amazing. For someone like me, just watching it was exhausting.”
Funimation will release the movie in select theaters in the U.S. on January 16. Here is the movie’s description: “A planet destroyed, a powerful race reduced to nothing. After the devastation of Planet Vegeta, three Saiyans were scattered among the stars, destined for different fates. While two found a home on Earth, the third was raised with a burning desire for vengeance and developed an unbelievable power. And the time for revenge has come.
