’Song of the South,’ ‘Dumbo’s Jim Crow Scene Will Not Be on Disney+
Surprisingly, casual racism and family-friendly entertainment are not synonymous here in the 21st century. “It wouldn’t be in the best interest of our shareholders to bring it back, even though there would be some financial gain,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said of the 1946 Song of the South, which won an Oscar for “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” and inspired Disneyland’s Splash Mountain. The film has never been released on home video in the U.S. due to its problematic portrayal of African-Americans. The Dumbo (1941) scene making light of the blackface “minstrel show” character and namesake of segregation laws was omitted from Tim Burton’s live-action reimagining, and will be cut from the original for streaming.
