Anca Damian Crafts Fantastical Homage Trailer for BIAF 2020

The 22nd Bucheon International Animation Festival (BIAF) has released its official trailer for the 2020 event. The spot is directed by award-winning Romanian filmmaker Anca Damian, who (among other international honors) won the BIAF2019 Best Animated Feature and Audience Award for her artistic and emotional feature, Marona’s Fantastic Tale.

The trailer celebrates animation history by capturing some of its most notable works, paying homage to Max Fleischer’s flapper icon Betty Boop (1930); The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, directed by George Dunning (1968); Fantastic Planet by René Laloux (1973); Academy Award-winning short Tango by Zbigniew Rybczyński (1980); and Academy Award-nominated feature Boy and the World by Alê Abreu (2013). Their influence is driven home by the use of a piece of Marona‘s soundtrack, “The Car Accident,” as the background music.

“As everything is connected, I linked some films from animation history that inspired me in using this fantastic cinematographic language,” said Damian. “The life of animation as an art is vibrant and all the artists are somehow in the same flow.”

Damian will participate as a BIAF2020 jury member for the Features competition, as well as creating the official poster and trailer.

BIAF2020 will be held October 23-27 in Bucheon, South Korea.
