SDCC: ‘Invincible’ S2 Trailer, Premier Date, Cast & Plot Details Revealed

Invincible fans got some great news this weekend at Comic-Con as it was announced that Prime Video’s popular comic-book adaptation will be beginning its second season on November 3.

The show, which is based on the work of Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, will offer four new episodes of its eight-episode second season in November, and the second half will arrive in early 2024. A new stand-alone episode, “Invincible: Atom Eve,” also premiered this weekend on Prime Video.

The star-studded voice cast includes Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, Zazie Beetz, Grey DeLisle, Chris Diamantopoulos, Walton Goggins, Gillian Jacobs, Jason Mantzoukas, Khary Payton, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Kevin Michael Richardson, Seth Rogen and J.K. Simmons.

Creator Robert Kirkman told the excited Comic-Con audience that the second season, which picks up right after the events of Season 1, will center on Angstrom Levy, new villain from the comics, which is voiced by Sterling K. Brown. The Season 2 voice cast also includes Tatiana Maslany, Daveed Diggs, Peter Cullen, Cliff Curtis, Calista Flockhart, Lea Thompson and Ben Schwartz.

“This is an extremely complicated to show,” Kirkman pointed out. “It’s an hour-long animated series. There are so many characters and scenes. We really had to wrap our heads around how this production was going to be managed … I can’t wait until people are like, ‘When is Season 3?'”

Marge Dean, head of studio, Skybound Animation, also told con attendees that the series phased out CG animation in the show from the second season, which proved challenging during the COVID pandemic. Kirkman assured fans that long breaks between the seasons of the show will be avoided in the future due to a smooth new production pipeline.

Kirkman said the show’s multiverse will be different from other superhero storylines. In Invincible, the interaction between the universes will act more as mirrors to one another. The alternate versions of the characters won’t be brought into the main universe and the plot device will act more as a character study in this upcoming season. Among the many themes of the second season is Mark’s (Yeun) self-growth as Omni-Man (Simmons) is no longer around to train him. He will also have to come to terms with the fact that he is a Viltrumite, like his father.

The show creator also noted that diversifying the characters from their original comic-book designs to animated life was his favorite change in the adaptation. The Grayson family was ethnically ambiguous in the comic-book format, but in the series, they are Korean American. In addition, Mark’s girlfriend Amber (Beetz) is Black in the animated series, and Mark’s best friend, William (Ranells), is openly gay on the show. He concluded, “We can’t downplay the importance of diversity.”
