Illumination’s ‘Migration’ Spreads Its Wings with a $17.5 Million Four-Day Weekend at the U.S. Box Office

Illumination’s ducks enjoyed a slow and steady flight at the number-three spot on the Christmas weekend box office. The studio’s 14th movie, Migration, which is directed by Benjamin Renner (Ernest & Celestine, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales), landed at the No. 3 spot on the U.S. box office chart this past weekend, with a four-day gross (Friday thru Monday) of $17.5 million from 3,761 theaters (with a three-day cume of $12.4 million).

The movie, which follows a family of mallards who try to convince their overprotective father to go on a vacation of lifetime from New England to Jamaica, got an A Cinemasore from audiences, while critics gave it a 69% fresh score on RottenTomatoes. Overseas, the movie has grossed $21.96 million (it opened a couple of week before Christmas, beginning at Dec. 6 in France, Belgium and Switzerland), bringing its total worldwide numbers to $39.46 million.

The only other animated movie on this past weekend’s box office chart is GKIDS/Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron, which earned four-day weekend of $3.8 million and a total of $38.2 million from its third weeks at the U.S. box office. The film’s worldwide take to date is $121.076  million.

Warner Bros had the No. 1 and 2 spots on the overall chart, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom landing on top, with a $40 million four-day weekend, and Wonka enjoying another sweet weekend with  $28 million four-day weekend and an $85.5 million cume in its second weekend in release.
