Batman Rules Another Weekend

Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight pulled off its fourth straight domestic box-office victory, earning an estimated $26 million over the weekend to bring its domestic draw to roughly $441 million. Worldwide, the Batman sequel has taken in approximately $704 million, though it’s not the reigning overseas champ. That distinction goes to Universal’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The third installment in the vfx-driven, supernatural action-adventure franchise was the top attraction in foreign markets for a second weekend, pulling in an estimated $56.1 million in 49 territories to drive its worldwide well over the $200 million mark.

Dark Knight edged out the Sony stoner comedy Pineapple Express. Starring Seth Rogan and James Franco, the latest from producer Judd Apatow opened at No. 2 with an estimated $22.4 million, knocking Dragon Emperor to the No. 3 spot on the North American chart. Warner Bros.’ modestly budgeted chick flick sequel Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 debuted at No. 4 with around $10.7 million, while Sony’s offbeat comedy Step Brothers dropped two notches to No. 5 with approximately $8.9 million.

Two animated features hit U.S. theaters this coming weekend. Lucasfilm Animation’s highly anticipated Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the stereoscopic 3-D family film Fly Me to the Moon from nWave Pictures and Illuminata Pictures will compete for moviegoer moolah. The producers of Fly Me to the Moon are hoping the pic does better than the last independently produced CG-animated space adventure to hit North American cinemas. Released by 20th Century Fox, the family adventure-comedy Space Chimps from Vanguard Animation and Starz Media has made roughly $25.4 million in the U.S. and is struggling to break even on its $37 million production budget.
