DreamWorks Takes Long View With Sequel Plans

We all know DreamWorks was ramping up sequels to such hit films as Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Madagascar — but now it appears that the studio has multiplied its gamble.

According to the U.K.’s Empire Online, the studio is planning to make Kung Fu Panda a six-chapter series and at least two and possibly as many as eight installments for Dragon. Madagascar, meanwhile, will return for two more outings to bring the series total to four films.

In speaking with DreamWorks chief Jeffrey Katzenberg, Empire reports the fourth Madagascar film will return the zoo animals to New York City, where their story began. He also says the six-chapter Kung Fu Panda saga is planned out to unfold over many years. Dragon is in the most state of flux, though eight films would match the number of volumes in the Cressida Cowell books series the movie is based on.

Current plans are for Kung Fu Panda 2 to be released May 27, followed by the third Madagascar on May 18, 2012 and a Dragon sequel in 2013.
