NFB Invites Artists to Celebrate McLaren’s 100th

In honor of legendary animator Norman McLaren, who would have been 100 years old in 2014, the National Film Board of Canada and the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership are inviting artists from around the world to respond to a call for projects entitled “McLaren Wall-to-Wall.” The chosen artists will create four out of a total of eight video pieces to be projected onto building facades in Montreal’s cultural district, the Quartier des Spectacles, from McLaren’s birthday on April 11 to June 1, 2014.

Artists from all disciplines—film, digital art, music, architecture—are asked to propose ideas for linear films three- to eight-minutes long, which much be inspired by one of four well-known McLaren films and include a recognizable visual excerpt of at least five seconds from it: Neighbours (1952), Begone Dull Care (1949), Synchromy (1971) or Spheres (1969). The proposed film must also be aimed at a general audience, work aesthetically with the selected building façade (Neighbours – Centre de Design UQAM; Begone – UQAM Bell Tower; Synchromy – Place de la Paix; Spheres – Cégep du Vieux-Montréal) and include a synchronized soundtrack.

Winners will receive cash prizes. The registration deadline is 12 noon EST on February 20, 2014 with final proposal deadline set for noon EST on March 6. Visit mclarenwalltowall.com for more information.
