‘Captain America’ Outmuscles Strong ‘Rio 2’ Debut

Despite a strong opening weekend for Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ Rio 2, Blu and the birds couldn’t knock off Marvel’s powerhouse Captain America sequel.

Rio 2, directed by Carlos Saldanha, opened in second place with ticket sales of $39 million for the weekend in the domestic market. Overseas, the film has sold $124 million of tickets, for a $163 million worldwide total. That total essentially ties the total taken in by the first Rio and puts it ahead of other recent animated features such as Sony’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 ($34 million) and DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman ($32.2 million).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier rode strong reviews and wide appeal to repeat as the top box office performer with $41.4 million in ticket sales. The film’s domestic total stands at $159 million after two weekends in release and its foreign total is $317 million for a $476 million worldwide total.

Other animated features still in release include Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which sold $1.8 million in tickets this weekend for 10th place at the box office. The movie has so far grossed $105 million domestic and $143 million overseas for a $248 million total. The LEGO Movie took in $460,000 in ticket sales this weekend. It’s domestic gross stands at $251 million and its foreign tally is at $173 million for a $424 million total. And Disney’s Frozen sold $372,000 in tickets, putting its total domestic take at $399 million. Its $713 million foreign take leaves it at $1.1 billion worldwide.
