Milk Shakes Up BAFTAs with ‘Doctor Who’

London based indie visual effects house Milk has won a British Academy Television Craft Award for its outstanding vfx work on the BBC’s Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special: Day of the Doctor, in the Special, Visual & Graphic Effects category. The studio was honored last night at the annual ceremony held in East London.

Milk earned the distinction for their work creating large scale CG environments, action sequences and CG spacecraft in stereoscopic 3-D to support the epic 75-minute special. Broadcast on BBC One in the U.K. on November 23, 2013, Day of the Doctor holds the Guinness World Record for largest simulcast of a TV drama in history. Practical effects collaborators Real SFX and The Model Unit were also awarded for their work on the special.You can check out their making-of video on Milk’s Vimeo channel.

Milk was also a major vfx contributor to David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive 3D, which was also nominated in the category. The studio opened for business just 10 months ago and has already completed work on two Doctor Who special: Day of the Doctor and the holiday episode Time of the Doctor, as well as the third season of Sherlock and the feature film 47 Ronin. Milk is currently at work on the eighth season of Doctor Who and a new 7-part mini series based on the acclaimed novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2015) as well as MGM’s upcoming feature Hercules.
