‘Boxtrolls’ Does Well in Competitive Second Weekend

Most of the attention paid to this weekend’s box office has gone to the success of Gone Girl and Annabelle, but for animation fans the story is a strong second-weekend showing for Laika’s The Boxtrolls.

The stop-motion feature ranked fourth in weekend box office with an estimated $12.4 million in domestic ticket sales. That puts its total domestic gross at $64.5 million, while its overseas gross of $26 million puts it at $58 million total. That puts it ahead at this point of Laika’s previous film, ParaNorman, though falling short of the performance of 2009’s Coraline.

Falling in just behind Boxtrolls was the sci-fi movie The Maze Runner with $12 million in ticket sales. The film has gross $74 million domestic and $118 million overseas for a $192 million total.

And still showing some legs is Marvel and Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which sold $3 million in tickets this past weekend. That movie has earned $323 million domestic and $330 million overseas for $654 million total gross.
