‘Knights of Sidonia’ Selected for SIGGRAPH Asia

Tokyo-based Polygon Pictures has announced that its animated series Knights of Sidonia has been nominated in the SIGGRAPH Asia 2014 Computer Animation Festival during Asia’s largest CG celebration. The show will also run during the Electronic Theater program. Knights of Sidonia debuted in Japan earlier this year and is now available through broadcast and streaming in over 50 countries.

Based on the mecha sci-fi manga by Tsutomu Nihei (published in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine), Knights of Sidonia is set a thousand years after a strange alien race called the Gauna have destroyed the solar system. A portion of humanity managed to escape in “seed ships” like the Sidonia, allowing the population to continue as the ships float through space. When a young man raised onship goes into training to pilot the weaponized robots known as Gardes, he is entrusted with the legendary unit known as Tsugumori, and must put his life on the line to pilot the machine against the Gauna in the battle for human survival.
