Elton John, STX Animating ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’

Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice’s oft-revived Broadway musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is getting the animated feature treatment with the help of fellow musician and producer Elton John. The movie will be released under the STX Family label and is being produced by John’s Rocket Pictures (Gnomeo & Juliet, Sherlock Gnomes) in association with Really Useful Group.

The project was announced by Adam Fogelson, Chairman of STX’s Motion Picture Group, during CinemaCon this week. Fogelson revealed the film will feature new songs written by Lloyd Weber and Rice.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was originally conceived by Lloyd Weber and Rice in the 1960s, inspired by the story in the Bible’s Book of Genesis about the “coat of many colors.” After the success of the duo’s Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera, they rededicated themselves to turning Joseph into a complete, family-friendly musical which has seen multiple revival productions — including West End, Broadway and touring engagements — since its 1968 debut.
