Canary Islands to Host Debut of Quirino Awards

Organizers of the first Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards announced at Annecy that the event will be held on Tenerife, largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, in the first half of 2018.

Awards’ goals include: Recognizing talent and achievement in the Ibero-American animation industry; build a bridge between animators in Spain and America; to build an Ibero-American market for animation; to reward animation in all its formats; and to create an Ibero-American co-production forum parallel to the awards.

The event will gather together the booming Latin American industry together with the one from Portugal, Andorra and Spain, creating a bridge between both continents and building a true twinning to develop together the great market that is Latin America.

The trophies have been named in honor to the creator of the first animated feature film in history. In 1917, Quirino Cristiani directed El Apóstol, an Argentine production in which 58,000 drawings in 35mm were used, as well as several mockups representing public buildings and the streets of the city of Buenos Aires.

The Quirino Awards have the main sponsorship of Turismo de Tenerife and the collaboration of some of the main international events of animation that take place in the Ibero-American panorama like the Festival of Animation, Video Games and Comics of Cuernavaca (Mexico); 3D Wire International Animation, Video Games and New Media Market (Segovia, Spain); and many other Latin American animation professionals.
