5 Animated Features Vie for Asia Pacific Screen Award

The nominees for the 12th Asia Pacific Screen Awards have been announced, with nods going to a total of 46 films from 22 countries.

In the running for Best Animated Feature Film are two films from the Russian Federation, Stanislav Sokolov’s Hoffmaniada and Levan Gabriadze’s Rezo, an animated documentary about Georgian artist/playwright Rezo Gabriadze; two Japanese films, Mari Okada’s directorial debut Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms and Mamoru Hosoda’s latest acclaimed pic Mirai; and from Taiwan, the animated feature debut of journalist-filmmaker Sung Hsin-Yin, On Happiness Road.

Overall, films from Japan and the People’s Republic of China lead the tally with seven nominations each. Films from Australia, India and Kazakhstan each received five nominations, and Uzbekistan has received a nomination for the first time.

Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Shoplifters (Japan) is the only film to receive three nominations and will compete for the highly coveted Best Feature Film Award with four other twice-nominated features: Lee Chang-dong’s Burning (Republic of Korea), Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s The Gentle Indifference of the World (Kazakhstan/France), Justine Samson’s Balangiga: Howling Wilderness (Philippines) and Phuttiphong Aroonpheng’s Manta Ray (Thailand/People’s Republic of China/France).
