‘Matsuinu’ Collectible Pups Get Their Own Anime Series

The popular Matsuinu line of consumer products and collectibles will be bounding to Japanese television screens in a new anime series. Matsuinu will premiere October 7 on TV Tokyo’s “Eeny Meeny Miny Mo” block and will air regularly on AT-X every Thursday at 10:05 p.m. starting October 12.

First introduced in March of 2018 as game prizes, the Matsuinu (Dog Matsu) characters are cute round canines inspired by the mischievous Matsuno sextuplets from the comedy anime series Mr. Osamatsu, produced by studio Pierrot and based on the manga Osamatsu-kun created by Fujio Akatsuka. The 2015-2021 series centers follows the six identical brothers in their daily (sometimes imaginary) lives, aged up 10 years from the manga and living as lazy NEETs.

The Matsuinu reimagine each brother as a distinct breed (albeit with the same spherical build):

  • Osamatsu = Shiba-inu
  • Karamtsu = Husky
  • Choromatsu = Retriever
  • Ichimatsu = Boston Terrier
  • Jyushimatsu = Pomeranian
  • Todomatsu = Chihuahua

What the pups will be getting up to in their new show was not revealed, but the Matsuinu website did announce the show’s official slogan: “Nanigenai nichijō nante koto shiawase” / “I am happy in my casual daily life.” So, fans can likely expect an easygoing kawaii comedy.
