New iPad App Procreate Dreams Offers an Accessible Animation Solution

Australian developer Procreate has announced the imminent launch of Procreate Dreams, a new animation app for iPad “designed for the next generation of storytellers.” The tool will launch in November, building on two-time Apple Design Award-winning Procreate’s six years of top-selling success.

“Today is a major milestone for Procreate, and for the animation industry,” Procreate CEO James Cuda said in the announcement. “Our team has worked for over five years to produce an animation product that is extraordinarily approachable and exceptionally powerful. Later this year, we’re helping to unlock the creative potential within all of us and giving a voice to storytellers everywhere.”

Procreate Dreams is designed for touch, offering accessible, intuitive and powerful animation creation tools for anyone to use, fine tuned for a speedy workflow. Animators using the program can direct their animations simply and spontaneously with tools such as Performing, which uses gestures to automatically add keyframes as it records the actions, bringing life to the screen in real time.

At the core of Procreate Dreams is the Multi-touch Timeline, which offers an easy way to navigate, organize and edit projects. Creators can now create and mix drawing, cel animation, keyframing, video editing and compositing with fluid gestures — no keyboard or mouse required.

Taking advantage of Apple silicon, Procreate’s next gen painting and compositing engine allows users to work on raster projects with resolutions up to 1 million by 1 million pixels and more layers than one could conceivably need. The app supports all Procreate brushes, which are optimized for the Apple Pencil stylus.

Procreate Dreams features include:

  • Real-time rendering with GPU acceleration built on Metal and powered by Apple silicon
  • Frame-by-frame animation in Flipbook
  • Quickly bookend sequences with simplified keyframes — refine transitions and edit Live Motion / Filters in a non-destructive workflow
  • Text and typography for titles, credits and animated annotations
  • Import ProRes footage up to 8k, edit in post or draw over to create annotated or rotoscoped projects using Procreate brushes
  • New audio engine to add voice overs, music and sound effects
  • Huge resolution as Procreate Dreams performs with hundreds of tracks, millions of pixels and functionally limitless layers
  • Innovative Procreate file format — open a 1TB file with no loading; made for iCloud synchronization, easy file management; in-file eternal undo history allows creatives to experiment without the risk of losing their work

Procreate Dreams will be available for iPad on the App Store on November 22 for $19.99 USD (no subscriptions). Visit procreate.com/dreams to learn more.
