As predicted, Warner Bros. well-reviewed Wonka, a musical prequel to Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Timothee Chalamet was the number-one movie at the box office. The whimsical movie, which is directed by Paul King (Paddington movies), made over $39 million in the U.S. in 4,203 theaters in its first weekend of release. Worldwide, the movie brought in $151.4 million.
Three animated movies continued to bring in family audiences to theaters this week. Miyazaki’s dynamited performer, The Boy and the Heron, which set box office records last week by landing at the number one spot (an amazing feat for an original anime release and GKIDS best performer to date) dropped to the third spot, with a $5.173 million weekend, bringing its total cume to a very healthy $23.142 million. To date, the Studio Ghibli title has made $109.897 million.
DreamWorks fourth Trolls outing, Trolls Band Together had a $4 million weekend and landed on the fourth position in the U.S. box office chart, with a cume of $88.663 million [Worldwide gross: $183.138 million], while Disney’s Wish was the sixth title on the chart, with a $3.2 million weekend and a cume of $54.275 million in the U.S. [Worldwide gross: $126.175 million].
Animation had a great weekend on Netflix as well with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and Leo taking the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 8 spots respectively on the most-watched list of the streamer.
Universal/Illumination’s Migration is the next animated movie to take wing in U.S. theaters on Dec. 22nd.
