Michel Gondry’s Animated Feature ‘Maya, Give Me a Title’ Sets NorAm Premiere at NYCIFF

Michel Gondry’s buzzy new paper cut-out animated feature Maya, Give Me a Title (Maya, donne-moi une titre) — a very personal project inspired by his long-distance parenting experiences — will make its North American premiere at the New York International Children’s Film Festival next month. The film will screen as a Spotlight Presentation on March 2 and March 16 at SVA. The festival has rated it suitable for ages eight and up.

Synopsis: Because Maya’s dad is always traveling, they keep in touch via nightly calls, creating stories in which she is the star. Because Maya’s dad is also renowned filmmaker Michel Gondry, we get these stories in all their inventive, stop-motion glory. Paper cutouts bring their shared stories to life in a series of vignettes, many with a wink and nod to the fourth wall. Maya’s dad uses his trademark wit, whimsy, and mixed media to tell tales about mermaids, volcanoes, and anything else the two dream up. Clearly crafted with great care, Maya, Give Me a Title serves as a love letter to animation, filmmaking, parenting, and storytelling.

Directed by Gondry, Maya, Give Me a Title will have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) this month. The film is produced by Georges Bermann at Partizan Films. Paris-based agency Indie Sales (My Life as a Zucchini, No Dogs or Italians Allowed) is handling global sales. The Jokers Films will distribute in France.

NYICFF will be held February 28 to March 16. Visit nyicff.org for more information.
