Overshadowed by other Rankin and Bass stop motion holiday favorites like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Mad Monster Party was recently released on DVD and deserves to become a staple of Halloween fun.
Directed by Jules Bass, the film features the voices of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller and tells the story of a young man summoned to a creepy island castle for a very strange gathering. Count Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and a host of other classic movie monsters are in attendance as Felix learns that he is to inherit control of the Worldwide Organization of Monsters from his long-lost uncle, Baron Von Frankenstein (Karloff).
The songs in Mad Monster Party are not the best of the Rankin and Bass offerings, but the psychedelic 60s sound is a lot of fun and the story is both funny and charming.
The DVD showcases a pristine transfer and includes the original theatrical trailer, a production art gallery, a poster and still gallery and a 24-page booklet on the film. It was released by Anchor Bay Ent. and retails for $19.95.
