The money machine that is Spider-Man continues to fill the pockets of Sony Pictures and Marvel Enterprises with the record-breaking home video release of the CG-heavy franchise tent pole.
First day sales saw seven million units moved, shattering a record set in Sept. by Disney/Pixars Monsters, Inc. When weekend totals are tallied, Spider-Man is expected to claim a three-day take of $190 million in North America alone, and set a record for the most revenue ever generated by a studio in a single weekend on a single title.
Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe, Spider-Man had the biggest theatrical opening weekend in box office history, surpassing the $100 million mark within just three days. It has gone on make $800 million worldwide. DVD and VHS sales are expected to put it over the $1 billion mark this week.
