Warner Home Video today released two sets of feature-length animated movies starring two very different cartoon crime fighters. A Batman double feature offers Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, while a Scooby-Doo double bill features Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School and Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire.
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker was the first feature film to come from the Batman Beyond television series and was first released in 2000. In the movie, a sleeker, deadlier and seemingly immortal Joker comes back to Gotham City with diabolical plans for the aging Bruce Wayne and his teenage prot’g’, Terry McGinnis. While uncovering the Joker’s secrets, McGinnis learns what happened the night Wayne fought the Joker for the last time.
The 2003 direct-to-DVD feature, Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman finds criminal masterminds The Penguin and Rupert Thorn teaming to sell illegal weapons, only to be challenged by a new caped crusader in Gotham. The badies and Batman himself are baffled by the appearance of Batwoman, a hard-hitting, gadget-using costumed avenger who may not be entirely on the right side of the law. Extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes, a gadget gallery and an exclusive Batman short titled Chase Me.
The gang of Mystery, Inc. is at it again in the animated movie Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire. This time the Great Dane and his teenage pals take off to a music festival in Australia, only to find that some of the performers have been snatched by a legendary bloodsucker known as the Yowie Yahoo. DVD extras include audio commentary by Scooby, Shaggy and Fred; music videos hosted by Scooby and Shaggy; and a Monster Factory Challenge activity containing hidden bloopers.
Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School debuted in 1988 and was the second feature-length adventure for the pooch and his mystery-solving pals. In the movie, Shaggy takes a job as a gym teacher at Miss Grimwood’s Finishing School for Ghouls, a gothic girls’ school that instructs the daughters of such famous monsters such as Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy and Frankenstein. With Scooby and Scrappy in tow, Shaggy prepares his students for a big volleyball tournament against the boys’ military academy next door. Meanwhile, Revolta, the Witch of the Web, hatches a scheme to make the girls’ school part of her evil team. Each Warner double-feature DVD set lists for $14.97.
